Stewardship Saturday

  • Marchant Ranch Marchant Ranch Peoa, UT USA (map)

With warmer temperatures and spring just around the corner, Summit Land Conservancy wants YOU to join us for some riverbank restoration at one of our most scenic properties.

Please register here!

Summit Land Conservancy's Stewardship Team is looking for 8-20 volunteers to help with planting willows and cottonwoods along the Weber River at the Marchant Meadows Preserve. Willows and cottonwoods serve many important functions in riparian zones. They provide shade and cover for stream life and improve water quality by absorbing and storing chemicals. Their ability to withstand flooding, to stabilize soils, and to grow quickly in saturated areas make them ideal for revegetating stream banks.

This particular site is seeing significant erosion during spring runoff. The bank on the south side of the river is a great location to add shading for fish habitat as well. The local beavers have been busy in this area, and the Conservancy plans to erect fencing and execute a multi-year project to establish more vegetation.

Volunteers should bring durable work gloves, long pants and long sleeved shirts, waterproof boots/muck boots (or waders if you have them!), sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks and water. This project will require using clippers and loppers to cut willow and cottonwood poles, and wading and/or walking in the river to plant the poles. Summit Land Conservancy will bring coffee and bagels to keep you caffeinated, and fueled up for the morning!
